In our last post, we covered the signs your dog might have a sensitive stomach, the gurgles, the gas, the unpredictable poops. If any of that sounded familiar, the next question is the obvious one: what do you actually put in the bowl?
There's no single food that fixes every dog's digestion, because there's no single cause of stomach sensitivity. But there are ingredients and feeding habits that make a consistent difference for most dogs. Here's what we'd suggest, once your vet has ruled out anything more serious.
The shorter and clearer the ingredient list, the easier it is to work out what agrees with your dog and what doesn't. Long lists of unfamiliar additives make that detective work almost impossible.

Although multi-protein blends are not necessarily the cause of stomach upset, it can make it hard to isolate a sensitivity. A recipe built around one named protein (chicken, beef, ostrich, venison, fish) gives you a clean starting point, and a clear next option if that one doesn't suit your dog.

Many people attribute allergy symptoms to the type of protein in their dog's food. However, the protein itself may not be the only factor. In some cases, dogs experience an improvement in their symptoms when switched to a fresh, gently cooked food containing the same protein. This may be because the way a protein is processed can affect how the body responds to it. Certain processing methods can create compounds that may contribute to inflammation and trigger symptoms that resemble food allergies.
Gently or lightly cooked food tends to be easier to digest than intensively processed alternatives, largely because less is done to the ingredients before they reach the bowl. Moisture-rich food also helps things move through the gut more comfortably than very dry, dense kibble.

Ingredients such as certain grains and other plant proteins such as soy-protein, along with artificial preservatives and flavourings, are common triggers for dogs with sensitive digestion. They're not automatically harmful to every dog, but they're often the first thing worth removing when you're troubleshooting.
While every dog is different, a few ingredients come up again and again as gentle on digestion:
If you're ever tempted to try a home-cooked "bland diet" during a rough patch, keep it genuinely plain (no seasoning, butter, or oils) and treat it as short-term support rather than a long-term plan. Home-cooked meals also need to be nutritionally complete and balanced if they're fed for anything more than the short term, otherwise they can lead to nutritional deficiencies or imbalances over time. Always check with your vet before making it a regular part of your dog's diet, particularly for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with existing health conditions.
Even the right food can cause short-term upset if it's introduced too quickly. A slow transition gives your dog's gut bacteria time to adjust:
Sensitive dogs may need longer at each stage, there's no harm in slowing this down further if you notice any wobbles along the way. If symptoms worsen or your dog refuses to eat, pause the transition and speak to your vet.
Every recipe is built around a single named protein, gently cooked, with nothing hidden in the ingredient list. Because our food is gently cooked rather than highly processed, it's gentler on the stomach and easier to digest, while still retaining the nutritional benefits of fresh ingredients. If your dog doesn't take to one protein, there are five others to try, so you're never starting from scratch. Our in-house Pet Nutritionist, Andreas, is closely involved in how every recipe is formulated, with digestibility as a starting point rather than an afterthought.
If your dog has a sensitive stomach, our advice is simple: rule out anything serious with your vet, pick one protein at a time, transition slowly, and keep a close eye on what changes. It takes a bit of patience, but for most dogs, it's a solvable problem, not a life sentence.
