Ostrich isn't the first protein most people think of when they picture dog food, but once you know what it actually offers, it's hard not to wonder why it isn't more common.
Here's why it's earned a permanent place in our line-up.
Ostrich is a red meat, but it doesn't behave like one nutritionally. It's naturally low in fat and cholesterol compared to beef, while still delivering the dense, high-quality protein dogs need for muscle maintenance and everyday energy. For dogs who need to manage their weight, or who just don't do well on richer, fattier meats, that combination is hard to beat.
Chicken and beef dominate the pet food aisle, which means most dogs have been eating one or both since puppyhood. Ostrich is still unusual enough that it hasn't built up the same repeated exposure, which matters, because sensitivities may develop over time to whatever a dog eats most often. That makes ostrich a strong option for dogs with allergies, sensitive digestion, or unexplained skin and coat issues, and a common choice in elimination diets and rotational feeding.
Ostrich is a notably good source of iron and B vitamins, both of which play a role in energy metabolism and healthy blood function. For active dogs in particular, that's a meaningful nutritional bonus on top of the protein itself.
Many owners who switch sensitive dogs onto ostrich report more regular  stools and less digestive upset. As with any protein, individual dogs vary, but it's one of the reasons vets often suggest it as a starting point for dogs with a history of tummy trouble.
We don't think ostrich should replace everything else in your dog's diet. Variety and rotation matter, and different proteins bring different strengths. But as one of six proteins in our range, it gives owners a genuine option: something to fall back on for a dog who reacts to chicken or beef, or simply as part of a varied, well-rounded diet.
If your dog hasn't tried ostrich yet, it might be worth a look, especially if you've been searching for a lean protein that's a little kinder on a sensitive system without compromising on nutrition.
