Shorter days, chilly winds, and a bit of rain - it’s tempting to skip the dog walk and cozy up indoors when winter sets in. But here’s the truth: your dog still needs their daily movement, fresh air, and mental stimulation, no matter the season.

At Happy Hounds, we believe in the trinity of well-being - good food, exercise, and love - all year round. So how can you and your pup keep enjoying those important daily walks, even in winter? With the right preparation and gear, winter outings can be just as joyful as summer strolls.

WHY WINTER WALKS MATTER

Physical health: Regular movement keeps your dog’s joints supple, muscles strong, and weight healthy - even when it’s cold outside.
Mental stimulation: Walks aren’t just for exercise; they’re your dog’s main source of environmental enrichment. New smells, sights, and sounds keep their mind sharp.
Emotional bonding: A shared adventure, even a short walk, strengthens your connection and gives your dog the attention and affection they crave.

Skipping walks for days on end can lead to pent-up energy, frustration, and sometimes destructive behaviours - not fun for you or your dog!

COMMON WINTER WALK CHALLENGES

We get it - winter can make walks tricky:

  • Cold, wet weather: Not all dogs have thick fur or undercoats. Small breeds, short-haired dogs, older dogs, or pups with joint issues can feel the cold quickly.
  • Wet coats and muddy paws: Coming home with a dripping, shivering dog can feel like more hassle than it’s worth.
  • Low visibility: Shorter daylight hours mean more walks happen in dim light or darkness, which can raise safety concerns.

But with the right gear, winter walks become far more enjoyable - for both of you.

ESSENTIAL WINTER GEAR FOR DOGS

  1. A Warm, Water-Resistant Coat
While not every dog needs a coat, many do - especially smaller, short-haired, or senior dogs. Look for a water-resistant coat that shields your dog from rain and keeps their core warm.

A good dog coat should:
✅ Fit snugly but comfortably (no tight spots or chafing)
✅ Allow free movement, especially around the shoulders
✅ Stay secure without slipping or flapping during play
✅ Be easy to put on and take off

The Cape Coat we offer at Happy Hounds is a great example: it’s a body raincoat with a Y-front and a pop collar, designed for comfort and function. It has adjustable strapping around the body to fit your hound snugly, keeping them protected without restricting movement. Plus, it’s lightweight, practical, and - best of all - it means your adventure buddy comes home far less wet and muddy after your walk!

Tip: Avoid cotton or wool coats, which can absorb water and become heavy. Choose materials specifically designed for outdoor use.

2. Reflective or High-Visibility Gear
Darker mornings and evenings call for reflective leashes or collars to keep your pup visible to cars, cyclists, and other walkers.

Shop our reflective long lead (6M) or reflective quick grab handle.

3. A Comfortable Harness or Collar
Ensure your dog’s harness or collar fits well and is adjusted for any extra layers (like a coat). Check that nothing is rubbing or chafing, especially on longer walks.

THE BIGGEST WINTER ESSENTIAL? YOU!

At the heart of every walk is the time, love, and attention you give your dog. Remember, you’re not just keeping their body fit - you’re nurturing their spirit and strengthening your bond.

So, layer up (for both of you!), embrace the cool air, and enjoy the quiet beauty of winter together. A little drizzle or chill doesn’t stand a chance against a wagging tail and a happy heart.

Winter doesn’t have to put a freeze on your dog’s exercise and happiness. With the right gear and mindset, you and your pup can turn every walk - rain or shine - into a little adventure.

Winter walks might look different, but they’re just as meaningful - for both of you.
